MDRI's Work in Peru

Since 2002, MDRI has worked in Peru to address serious abuses against people with intellectual and psychosocial disabilities and engage the government to undertake mental health reform.

Beginning with the two-year investigation for
Human Rights and Mental Health in Peru, a report documenting the major human rights issues facing people with intellectual and psychosocial disabilities in the country, MDRI has engaged the government to respect and enforce the rights of users of mental health services in the country and to end discriminatory practices. MDRI has also trained its local partners to investigate abuses in psychiatric institutions and in international human rights standards for people with intellectual and psychosocial disabilities.

Currently, MDRI is training people with psychosocial disabilities and their family members
how to effectively organize and create strategic actions plans to influence government policies.
