2003 Paul G. Hearne Award: Alison A. Hillman, Director of Mental Disability Rights International’s Americas Programs, received the 2003 Paul G. Hearne Award from the American Association of People with Disabilities in recognition for her demonstrated leadership and efforts to empower persons with disabilities.
Torment not Treatment (Serbia): Following a four year investigation, MDRI released a report detailing the human rights abuses perpetrated against children and adults in Serbia with disabilities, forced to live out their lives in institutions.

Behind Closed Doors (Turkey): A video press release documenting human rights abuses in orphanages and psychiatric institutions in Turkey's mental health system was created. MDRI's findings were cited as a concern in the November 2005 EU Commission's report on human rights in Turkey and the use of unmodified ECT (electroconvulsive or "shock" treatment), featured in MDRI's report, was recently abolished at Bakirköy, Turkey's largest psychiatric hospital.
